MOM, I can’t GET MARRIED…I have a food allergy

My 5 year old son came to me with an unbelievable understanding of his allergy. I was both proud and devastated that he had used his knowledge of his life-threatening peanut allergy to come to this conclusion.

 “Mom, I can’t get married because my wife might eat peanuts and then kiss me and then I would get a reaction. She may not understand.”

He then further explained that she might not know how to cook or choose ingredients that were nut-free. He was very concerned she would not know how to read labels and discern between safe and unsafe food products.

Together my son and I went to pick out a file box and I organized everything I had collected over the years on food allergies and asthma. This box would be for his wife and himself to read together so she would know everything about food allergies that I knew.

This small gesture was an incredible comfort to him and he enjoys looking at what I continue to collect, knowing that someday it will be his. The opportunity to become closer to your child from food allergies continues to amaze me. I hope you can make your own special file box for your own future in-law.
