Attention Schools:

If you choose to have a peanut-free room at your school, please be diligent about checking every food item that comes into the classroom every day, whether the food is to be used as a snack, lunch, art project or game!

Don't take for granted that everyone is going to comply with the peanut-free rule all of the time.  Even well-meaning people make mistakes.

This is a huge responsibility to put on people who don't live with food allergies everyday because there's more to it than not sending peanut butter.  Peanut products can be hidden in many different foods, so reading labels every time is essential

Don't develop a false sense of security!

Having a peanut-free room should mean more work, not less!

We welcome and encourage anyone in the country to nominate your school for recognition of their proactive approach to handling food allergies.  Be sure to include the school's city and state.

Please send information to publish@foodallergyconnection.org

Please put "FAC Nomination" in subject line.

Food Allergy Connection gives our heartfelt thanks to the following schools and organizations.  They have shown great concern for their food allergic students and have gone the extra mile to do whatever it takes to keep them safe at school.

Harry R Hamilton Elementary

Sackville, Nova Scotia Canada

I am currently living in the United States but have moved here from Canada. I was really hoping to nominate my daughters school Harry R Hamilton Elementary in Sackville, Nova Scotia Canada for an excellent job banning peanut products from her school and being very diligent on making sure the school was safe for my daughter. I never had to worry about peanut products in her school. Every teacher, volunteer, and student in this 500+ student school was aware and very proactive in keeping my daughter safe. Thank you everyone for working so hard!!

I moved here 6 months ago and have been fighting for the basic containment of peanut products. My daughter has a smell, touch and ingestion peanut allergy and needs to be in a peanut free environment.

I am now having to move to a new school district that is being a little bit more reasonable but nothing close to a "ban" of the product. I am hoping soon I will be able to write in about her currant school being as cooperative. I am hoping one day to have the schools here in Colorado be as proactive towards this very deadly allergy as there neighbors to the north. I took the school system back in Canada for granted dealing with the allergy. It was common practice to ban the product in order to keep children safe. After moving here to America I was shocked that it is not taken seriously where I live. It made me realize how lucky I was to have a school that was willing to do anything from explaining to upset parents the seriousness of the issue, making sure my daughter was in the teachers group on all field trips and having every teacher and volunteer check snacks and lunches for all the students and even on occasions replacing parts or all of the lunch to ensure her safety.

They even send reminders home when seasonal activities were taking place and reminders in the newsletter. The school went out of there way to keep the school safe with not one complaint. My daughter always felt safe going to school as did I.

Thank you
