FAC Founder Shares Two Recent Experiences:
Beware of Beauty Products:
I recently bought some body cream from Bath & Body Works called Coconut Lime Verbena. I bought several
products in that line, but it wasn't until I had used the body cream once that I realized it contains Almond Oil. Luckily
my tree nut-allergic son didn't touch me when I had it on. The other products I bought from that line were free of Almond
Oil. I knew better than to buy something like that without reading the label, but it slipped through the cracks this
time. Please be extra careful to check all non-food items you buy!
Here's Another Reminder About Cross-Contamination:
I'm so thankful our local doughnut shop told me years ago not to let our peanut-allergic son eat
their doughnuts. They told me the risk of cross-contamination was too high since they use peanuts and other nuts as
toppings on some of their doughnuts. Even though our son doesn't eat there, my husband and I get their doughnuts on
occasion (yes, donuts are my weakness!), and last weekend could have been a disaster if we hadn't listened to them.
I was eating part of a chocolate-covered long john, and I found a peanut in it. Not on it, but in the middle
of the dough. It was a wake-up call for me even though my son doesn't eat there. I had never experienced this first-hand
until now, so it was a bit of a shock. This can happen anywhere that serves the allergic food, so please be careful
and very selective about letting your allergic kids eat at restaurants and bakeries!
